Artificial Intelligence - maximum likelihood problem?

Hi all,

The basic question that haunts most of us is what is intelligence. Here is what I feel like. It could be as simple as pattern matching. Think, when we are given a problem and asked to write an algorithm for it, we try to find what should be done to solve that problem. If we think deeply, then it is nothing but we are trying to map this problem to all the problems we have studied. As we know the solution of all those problems, we accordingly find a solution. If a perfect match occurs we simply say "use that algorithm" and draw a reference. Just like, sometimes we say "this is nothing but a shortest path finding problem and can be done in blah blah blah ways". If there is no perfect match then sometimes we design a new algorithm whose individual parts are some concepts learned at different times. So, the new algorithm is nothing but a combination of different patterns we have seen. But, all these arguments lead to the fact that intelligence is a kind of pattern matching that is being continuously done by ourselves and also everything we are learning from our mistakes and success. But, is it all??

Is it that we mean intelligence by who ever think correctly. let me bring another concept known as "logically". What is meant by logically. So, what is logic. Though question, but I think we are the creators of different logic system. The logic system is defined by us so that we can justify most of the examples we used to use. Those few which do not comply with the system, we say them as "Exceptions". So, is not it maximum likelihood theory. The system of axioms which explains most of the examples(word facts) are taken to be logic system. So, machine learning guys would understand that whether we going in correct direction or not.

But, what I think is that intelligence is something which may drive us beyond this logical system. That is what is known as path breaking research. We know such examples.. But, I think path breaking research is also guided by maximum likelihood theory. Why people think differently. Why intelligent part of our mind think a bit differently sometimes illogically to prove something different???

The common place to think in this way is when someone is explaining some topic and I am trying to find a bug in his way. We try to first match whether the theory is logical or not ( comply with existing system of logic example could be is he adding properly or not :)) and then we try to match whether all the real life examples are covered by it or not ( likelihood ) and ultimately we think of exceptions to his theory.

The point I am trying to make is that we think out of box just when we desire to find a better system of logic theory that could cover all the existing covered examples and also the examples which are not covered yet. So, is it so that all this theory of "maximum likelihood" is what real intelligence is all about?

This topic is really debatable topic of all time and I would like to hear some personal comments on this topic.

Hi ,

Most of you might had the dream of watching first day first show of HP7 but due to unavoidable circumstances it might not be materialized. I want to aggravate their feelings and hope this blog will force them to visit some multiplex in this weekend :)
Yes, as expected HP7 turns out to be excellent with so many new trends in HP series. I am a harry potter fan, so though my right hand wrist was almost twisted, I said "REPAIRO" & rushed to IMAX :)
Obviously, IMAX was then full with harry potter fans. Me and my friends spent half an hour to decode the sentiments of harry and hermione in HP poster.

It was my first day in Mumbai IMAX and it was awesome and the screen was huge, definitely reminding me of NANDAN (Kolkata).

Now, let me share what the movie turned out to me..

It was awesome... Daniel Radcliffe was as usual performed well. Emma Watson was gorgeous and lovely to watch. The movie was truthful to the story (acc to my friends) and this makes the difference. Other HP series movies cut everything very short and brief while this one tried its best to keep every important details of the story and that makes it more special n interesting to watch. This had been possible since it shows part 1 of harry potter and deathly hallows.

Hermione, Ron and Harry all characters were live. The complications of relationship, emotion and friendship were perfectly shown. The starting of the movie was excellent. The emotional start of the war against the dark lord was fabulous. Emma Watson's acted excellently throughout. I never saw her acting so deeply.
Harry was not in Hogwarts so we discovered Radcliffe differently. The scene with NAGINI, sword of Gryffindor, Horcrux and all were excellent.
Somewhere the movie failed to explain things and that forced us to think about whys and hows in certain parts. The other thing that disappointed me was that there was no climax, instead it stopped in the midway. So, it remained incomplete till its second part releases...
It is definitely a must to watch movie and NO DOUBT about that... Please find the link to trailer below the picture posted in blog...
